Rock Chip Repair in Grand Junction, CO

Signature Windshield of Grand Junction repairs rock chips and short cracks in laminated windshields so the glass stays in the car. Our techs follow the ROLAGS repair standard: we drill a clean entry point where needed, pull air out of the break under vacuum, push in optically matched resin under pressure and cure it with UV light. That covers windshield chip repair for bullseyes, star breaks, half-moons and combination breaks, windshield crack repair under about 6 inches and long crack repair on the right kind of crack. A chip repair takes about 30 minutes and keeps the factory urethane seal and your forward camera untouched.

Signature Windshield of Grand Junction provides mobile rock chip and windshield crack repair to Grand Junction and surrounding Colorado towns, including Fruita, Clifton, Palisade, Orchard Mesa, the Redlands, Loma, Delta, Montrose, Parachute and Rifle. You get a straight repair or replace answer from a photo, a firm price before we start and help opening the claim if your insurer covers chips.

Types of Windshield Damage We Repair

The shape of a break tells us whether resin will hold. These are the ones we see most on Grand Valley windshields.

  • Bullseye Chip Repair

A bullseye is a round chip with a cone pressed into the outer ply of glass, usually from a small stone hitting square on. The break is clean and circular, so resin flows in evenly and the repair often fades to a faint dot. Bullseyes smaller than a quarter, about 1 inch across, are the easiest windshield chip repair we do and rarely take more than half an hour.

  • Star Break Repair

A star break has short legs running out from the impact point. Those legs are what spread into a crack, often on the first cold morning when the defroster heats the glass from inside. We fill each leg out to its tip so the star cannot keep growing. A star with legs inside a quarter-sized circle is a good candidate for repair. Longer legs get a closer look before we quote.

  • Half-Moon Chip Repair

A half-moon is a partial bullseye: the stone struck at an angle and broke out a semicircle instead of a full ring. It behaves much like a bullseye during repair, with an even cone that takes resin well under vacuum and pressure. Most half-moons under 1 inch end up hard to spot once the resin is UV cured and the surface is scraped and polished flush.

  • Combination Break Repair

A combination break is a bullseye with legs, the most common shape on cars that follow gravel trucks on I-70. It has a cone and a set of cracks at once, so we fill the cone first and then work resin out along each leg. Combination breaks up to about the size of a quarter can usually be repaired in one visit of about 30 minutes.

  • Windshield Crack Repair Under 6 Inches

A short crack running from a clear impact point can often be stopped and filled. We stop-drill the tip if needed so it cannot run, then fill the crack from the impact point outward with a thinner resin. Cracks shorter than about 6 inches, away from the edge and out of the driver's direct line of sight are the best candidates. Expect $90 to $150 for this repair.

  • Long Crack Repair

Some cracks longer than 6 inches can still be filled with long-crack resin instead of replaced. It works when the crack has a clean impact point, sits away from the edge and has not branched. The payoff is real: no new glass, no disturbed urethane and no camera calibration. If a long crack is not a good fit, we tell you before any work starts and quote the replacement instead.

  • Edge Crack Assessment

An edge crack starts within about 2 inches of the glass edge. The edge carries the most stress from the body flexing and from the urethane bond, so a filled edge crack tends to run again. In most cases an edge crack means a new windshield. We still look at it, because a small chip near the edge that has not yet cracked can sometimes be saved.

  • Stress Crack Assessment

A stress crack has no impact point. It starts from heat, cold or the body twisting, often at the edge, and runs across the glass. With no chip to fill and no clean starting point, resin has nothing to anchor to, so a stress crack usually needs replacement. If your crack appeared overnight with no rock strike, send us a photo and we will tell you which it is.

Can a Cracked Windshield Be Repaired?

Often, yes. Chips smaller than a quarter, about 1 inch across, and cracks shorter than about 6 inches can usually be repaired with resin. The damage should sit away from the glass edge and out of the driver's direct line of sight, and it should come from an impact point rather than heat or body stress.

Location matters as much as size. A repair always leaves a slight trace, and a trace right in front of the driver can bend the view at night or in low sun, so ROLAGS steers repairs away from the driver's primary viewing area. Edge cracks run again because the edge carries the most stress.

When repair is not the right call, the fix is a new laminated windshield set in urethane, with the forward camera calibrated if your car has one. We can do that in your driveway too. See our mobile windshield replacement page for how a replacement works and how long it takes.

How Much Does Rock Chip Repair Cost in Grand Junction?

Rock chip repair in Grand Junction typically costs $60 to $130 for the first chip, and each extra chip on the same windshield adds about $10 to $25. Crack repair under 6 inches runs $90 to $150. All of that is a fraction of a new windshield, which starts around $300 without cameras.

Insurance often makes the bill smaller still. Chip damage falls under comprehensive coverage, and many insurers waive the deductible for a repair because it heads off a replacement claim. Colorado does not require that, so it depends on your policy. We help you open the claim and check before we start.

Chip Seal, Gravel and Grand Valley Weather

Grand Valley roads throw a lot of rock. CDOT's 2021 Mesa County chip seal project put loose stone down on US 6, CO 139, the US 50 frontage road and CO 141, and orchard, gravel and oilfield trucks keep it moving for months after. Add rockfall and truck traffic on I-70 through De Beque Canyon and windshields here take a steady beating.

The weather is what turns a chip into a crack. Grand Junction sits at about 4,583 feet, with July highs in the low 90s and January lows in the high teens. Hot sun on a dark dash, a cold car wash or the defroster on full on a January morning all flex the glass around the break, and the legs of a star can run into a long crack in a single drive.

Until we get to you, put clear tape over the chip to keep out dirt and water, and defrost gently. Drivers out toward Palisade and the canyon catch more highway chips than most, and we drive out to repair them in the driveway.

Rock Chip Repair FAQs

How long does a windshield chip repair take?

A single rock chip repair takes about 30 minutes, including cleaning the break, filling it under vacuum and pressure, UV curing the resin and polishing the surface flush. Extra chips on the same windshield add a few minutes each. You can drive the car right away, because no urethane is disturbed and nothing needs to cure afterward.

Does insurance cover rock chip repair in Colorado?

Usually, if you carry comprehensive coverage. Many insurers waive the deductible for chip repair because a $60 to $130 repair prevents a much larger replacement claim. Colorado law does not require that waiver, so check your policy. We help you open the claim and confirm coverage before we start.

Will the chip disappear after repair?

Most chips fade to a faint mark, but none vanish completely. The resin restores strength and clarity, and a clean bullseye smaller than a quarter can be hard to find afterward. Older chips full of dirt or water leave more of a trace, which is one reason to repair a chip soon after it happens.

How long can I wait to fix a rock chip?

Fix it within a few days if you can. Every week a chip stays open it collects dirt and moisture, which clouds the repair, and one cold morning with the defroster on can run it into a crack longer than 6 inches. Clear tape over the chip buys time until we arrive.

Are DIY windshield chip repair kits worth it?

A kit can work on a small, fresh bullseye, but it cannot pull a strong vacuum or clean the break the way shop equipment does. Trapped air leaves a visible ring and a weaker repair. A failed DIY repair also cannot be redone well, because the old resin blocks new resin from flowing in.

Can you repair a chip in the driver's line of sight?

Sometimes, but we are careful about it. Every repair leaves a slight trace, and ROLAGS steers repairs away from the driver's primary viewing area because that trace can distort the view. A small, clean chip there may be fine. A larger break in front of the driver usually means a new windshield.
