Fresh Chip Seal on US 6 and CO 139

Loma drivers get more than their share of loose rock. When CDOT chip sealed four stretches of state highway in Mesa County in 2021, a $3.3 million job, two of them ran through this end of the valley. US 6 was sealed from milepost 11 to milepost 20, which is Mack at milepost 11.1, Loma at 15.1 and Fruita just short of 20. CO 139 was sealed from milepost 0 to milepost 6, the first six miles north out of Loma.

A chip seal leaves a coat of small stone on top of fresh oil, and the extra stone stays loose until traffic and sweepers clear it. Drive behind a hay truck or a stock trailer on that surface at highway speed and a bullseye in the glass is close to a sure thing. Pull back, stay off the shoulder, and avoid passing on fresh chips. If one does hit, look for the shape. A clean bullseye or a small star break with short legs is a repair job. A crack that starts within about 2 inches of the edge, called an edge crack, almost always means a new windshield, because the edge carries most of the stress in the glass.

CO 139 keeps going a long way past the sealed part. It runs 72 miles north to Rangely and climbs over Douglas Pass at 8,268 feet, with no real towns along the way. A chip picked up on the way to Rangely spends hours flexing through cold air at the pass and warm air in the valley. That is how a quarter-sized break turns into a crack across the glass by the time you get home.

Ranch Trucks and Farm Rigs in Loma and Mack

Farming around Loma today is mostly small-scale cattle, row crops and acreage people keep for the lifestyle. That means a lot of work pickups, flatbeds and older SUVs, many of them driven daily on county dirt. Mesa County maintains about 3,000 lane miles of road and roughly half of it is dirt or gravel, so the rock that ends up in your windshield often comes from your own lane.

Older trucks have one advantage. A windshield on a vehicle without a rain sensor or forward camera is usually the cheapest kind to replace, about $300 to $600 installed with OEM-equivalent glass. Newer half-ton and three-quarter-ton pickups often carry lane keeping and automatic braking, and those run about $700 to $1,500 once camera calibration is included. Farm trucks also tend to have some rust on the pinchweld, the metal flange the glass bonds to. When the old windshield comes out, we clean that flange, treat and prime any bare metal, and only then lay new urethane, so the bond holds and the rust does not creep back under the molding.

Highline Lake, Boat Trailers and Campers

Highline Lake State Park sits five miles up CO 139 from the Loma exit, on 738 acres with two lakes, 56 campsites and 105 picnic sites. On summer weekends the road fills with tow vehicles pulling boats and campers, and the park's west entrance moved to R Road in 2024, adding another gravel approach. Trailer tires throw rock right at the vehicle behind them, and a boat on a tall bunk trailer can hide a gravel patch until you are on top of it. Leave extra room behind any trailer on the lake road, and more on the stretch where the park entrance road turns to gravel.

Mack also hosts Country Jam, the camping and country music festival that has run there since 1992, and the Loma Boat Launch puts more trailers on the river road. Motorhomes and fifth-wheel tow rigs are part of our Loma work every summer. An RV windshield costs about $1,000 to $3,500 or more, depending on one-piece or two-piece glass and the chassis.

Most of these jobs never see a shop. With mobile windshield replacement, we bring the glass, urethane and tools to your campsite, storage yard or ranch. The one thing we need is a dry spot, since rain or blowing dust on the pinchweld can ruin a bond. In a windy afternoon we will set up in a barn or a garage bay, or come back in the morning when it is calm.

  • Chip repair, first chip: about $60 to $130
  • Short crack under 6 inches: about $90 to $150
  • Older truck windshield without sensors: about $300 to $600
  • Camera windshield with calibration: about $700 to $1,500
  • RV windshield: about $1,000 to $3,500 or more

Weather, Insurance and Booking a Loma Visit

Loma sits at 4,524 feet, a bit lower than downtown Grand Junction, and shares the valley's dry climate of under 10 inches of rain and snow a year. July highs climb into the low 90s and January lows drop into the high teens. That daily swing in temperature is what spreads a chip. Water in an open break freezes and pries it wider, so tape over a fresh chip and call us before the next cold night.

On insurance, Colorado law does not require a zero-deductible glass benefit. A windshield claim goes under comprehensive coverage and your deductible applies unless you bought full glass. Many insurers waive the deductible on chip repair since it saves them a replacement. Call your insurer or let us start the glass claim with you on the phone.

Loma counted 1,314 people in the 2020 census and sits 18.5 miles from Grand Junction, so we group Loma and Mack visits on the same day when we can. We work Monday through Friday from 8am to 5:30pm, with Saturdays by appointment. Before we leave, we give you the safe drive-away time for the urethane we used, which can be 30 minutes or a few hours depending on the product, the heat and the humidity. On the far side of Grand Junction, we also replace windshields in Clifton, where US 6 picks up again east of town.

Loma and Mack glass work

Auto Glass Services for Loma and Mack

Loma calls lean toward pickups, farm rigs and campers. These are the jobs we do most out here.

  • Truck and Ranch Rig Windshields

Half-ton, three-quarter-ton and older work trucks are our most common Loma windshields. We match the part by VIN so tint bands, mirror mounts and sensor brackets line up, set the glass on fresh urethane, and reset the molding. An older truck without sensors usually costs about $300 to $600, and newer camera-equipped pickups more.

  • Door Glass and Regulators

Door windows are tempered glass, so a hit from a gate or a rock turns them into cubes that cannot be repaired. We vacuum out the door panel and the floor, test the window regulator and motor, and fit new glass that runs clean in the channel. Door glass costs about $200 to $450 installed.

  • RV, Camper and Tow Vehicle Glass

Highline Lake and Country Jam bring motorhomes and tow rigs onto CO 139 and US 6 all summer. We source RV windshields by chassis and model and set one-piece or two-piece glass at your site or storage lot. Most RV windshields run about $1,000 to $3,500 or more, and we quote freight up front.

  • Chip and Short Crack Repair

Chips from the 2021 US 6 and CO 139 chip seal still show up on Loma windshields. A break smaller than a quarter, or a crack shorter than about 6 inches, can usually be filled with resin and cured under UV light in about 30 minutes. The first chip costs about $60 to $130.

  • Camera Calibration After Replacement

Lane keeping and automatic emergency braking rely on a forward-facing camera mounted behind the windshield. After new glass goes in, we run a static calibration with targets on level ground or a dynamic one on a marked road. Calibration runs about $150 to $400, and AAA measured the average at roughly $360.

  • Back Glass With Defroster

Rear windows on pickups and SUVs break from shifting loads and tools in the bed. Back glass is tempered and cannot be repaired, so we clean out every cube, fit new glass and reconnect both defroster tabs. Sliding rear truck windows are part of this work too. Expect about $300 to $700 depending on the vehicle.

Loma and Mack Windshield FAQs

Do you drive out to Loma and Mack?

Yes. Loma is 18.5 miles from Grand Junction at I-70 Exit 15, and Mack is 3.5 miles farther up US 6. We bring the glass and tools to your ranch, shop or driveway and often book Loma and Mack jobs on the same day. We work Monday through Friday, 8am to 5:30pm.

Can you fix a chip from the drive up CO 139?

Often, yes. A chip smaller than a quarter that sits outside the driver's direct view can usually be filled with resin in about 30 minutes for $60 to $130. The climb over Douglas Pass at 8,268 feet chills the glass fast, so a chip from that trip can spread. Call before it does.

Can you replace a windshield on an older ranch truck?

Yes. Older pickups without rain sensors or a forward camera are the simplest windshields we install, usually about $300 to $600 with OEM-equivalent glass. We check the pinchweld for rust when the old glass comes out, since farm trucks often have some, and prime any bare metal before the new urethane goes on.

Is an RV windshield replacement possible at Highline Lake?

In most cases, yes, as long as we have a level, dry spot and calm wind. RV windshields cost about $1,000 to $3,500 or more and often need a few days to order by chassis and model. We can set the glass at your campsite, your storage lot or your home in Loma.

Does insurance cover windshield replacement in Loma?

If you carry comprehensive coverage, a rock or hail break to the windshield is covered, minus your deductible unless your policy adds full glass. Colorado does not require a zero-deductible glass benefit. Many insurers waive the deductible for a chip repair, so fixing a chip early often costs you nothing.
